Nelia has a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) in Home Economics. With the BS degree she received teacher certification for kindergarten through grade 12. For 10 years Nelia taught pre-school and had a plant maintenance business. In 1987 she came to UNT as the Department of Journalism secretary. She retired from that position in May 2002 and returned in September 2002 as an advisor for the undergraduate Journalism programs.
