Academics: CLASSROOM FACILITIES

The Department of Journalism is committed to providing students with the latest technology required to succeed in the fast-paced journalism profession. These computer classrooms and facilities, all based in the General Academics Building (GAB), offer state-of-the-art technology and the most current software applications.

MacLab GAB 305Mac Lab: GAB 305
GAB 305 serves as the general access computer facility to all journalism students, founded and originally funded by long-time journalism professor Jim Rogers in the early 1990s. The recently reconfigured lab features new iMacs, as well as both film negative and flatbed scanners. A digital camcorder is available for student checkout as well. Software applications include Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Flash, Illustrator, Final Draft, iLife, and Microsoft Office. Reference materials ranging from resume writing manuals, logo and brochure design books, and stock photo collections are also available in this facility. Lab assistants are on hand to tutor, answer questions about software applications, and troubleshoot hardware problems.





Writing Lab GAB 112Jack Tinsley Reporting Classroom and Lab: GAB 112
This computer-based facility is for use by the journalism 2310 and 2320 (Intro to Media Writing and News Writing courses), and journalism 5010 (Reporting Practices) classes and their associated writing labs. Students use the facility to write and edit stories for class assignments and the UNT student newspaper, The North Texas Daily.  This computer-based classroom gives students a unique newsroom experience and the opportunity to excel in their journalism career at UNT.

 

 

 

Photojournalism ClassroomPhotojournalism Classroom and Lab: GAB 111
This computer-based facility is for use by photojournalism classes and their associated labs. Students have access to iMacs, photo-editing software, film negative scanners, dark rooms and individual color printers.  There are two digital cameras and a digital camcorder available for student checkout as well.  Software applications used in this facility include Photo Mechanic, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Acrobat, and Director. Lab assistants are on hand to tutor, answer questions about software applications, and troubleshoot hardware problems.
Open lab hours are scheduled each semester.

 

 

JCC GAB 319Journalism Computer Classroom: GAB 319
This facility is the main computer-based facility for use by journalism classes teaching software applications used within the journalism profession (JOUR 2200), writing for electronic news media (JOUR 2340), advanced electronic writing and reporting, (JOUR 3325), news editing (JOUR 3320), online journalism (JOUR 3340), and feature writing (JOUR 3310), as well as for lectures and student presentations.  When not in use as a classroom it is also an extension of the journalism general access facility, the MacLab. The classroom is equipped with iMacs, a flatbed scanner and a digital projector. Software applications include Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Final Draft, iLife, and Microsoft Office.

 

Journalism Computer ClassroomJournalism Computer Classroom: GAB 110
This new smaller, more personal computer-based facility is currently used for the Public Relations Communications class (JOUR 4460).  The classroom is equipped with Macintosh G4 towers, flat screen monitors and a digital projector. Software applications include Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, iLife, and Microsoft Office. Future use will be for journalism graduate classes as well as training classes for other journalism-based professionals.

 

 

 

Electronic News GAB 101 Electronic News Facility: GAB 101
This new facility is currently used for the electronic news gathering class (JOUR/RTVF 3430) and their associated audio and editing lab.  Students have access to PC computers equipped with the latest audio and video editing software as well as cameras and audio recorders used for completing classroom assignments.  This facility will also be used by students in the new Online Journalism class (JOUR 3340), which will use the video, audio and editing equipment.  Software applications include Burli, Avid and Microsoft Office.
