Getting Started
Students wishing to major in journalism must meet department requirements for admission. It is important to note that admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the journalism major. Admission is based on departmental application once the requirements listed below have been satisfied.

All students entering UNT and wishing to pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism enter as pre-majors. Before applying for journalism major status, pre-majors must complete at least 45 hours of college coursework including the following:
Students interested in electronic news enter as pre-majors. before applying for major status, pre-majors must complete at least 45 hours of college coursework including the following:
Admission for Transfer Students
Students transferring to UNT from other colleges and universities may fulfill many of these requirements through transfer coursework. Official equivalencies of courses, however, are not determined until after enrollment at UNT. Transfer students should expect to spend one or more semesters at UNT as pre-majors before application to the major. During this time as pre-majors, transfer students should pass the grammar/spelling/punctuation test, which is administered by the UNT Writing Center.
Admission for Post-baccalaureate Students
Students who have already completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university may be admitted to the journalism major prior to completion of the pre-major requirements provided their overall grade point average in all college work attempted is at least 2.5, and 2.75 for electronic news. Post-baccalaureate majors must follow all course prerequisites and sequence restrictions.
