This information should help answer any questions you might have about the Journalism program at The University of North Texas. If this page does not answer your question, visit the Department office, located in Room 102 of the General Academic Building (GAB). Thank you for your interest.


Annual Banquet
Held every spring, usually in April, the banquet recognizes outstanding achievements by students, alumni and professionals. For information about the banquet and how to get tickets, contact Nancy Eanes in the Journalism Department office (Room 205 of the GAB), by phone (940) 565-4778, or by e-mail at neanes@unt.edu


Apply for admission
Undergraduate applicants may apply on the Internet at http://www.unt.edu, by using the form in the back of the undergraduate catalog, by calling Undergraduate Admissions at (940) 565-2681 or by visiting the Eagle Student Services Center adjacent to the University Union in the center of the campus. Graduate student applicants (master's and doctorate) may apply on the Internet at http://www.unt.edu, by using the form in the back of the graduate catalog, by calling Graduate Admissions at (940) 565-2636, or by visiting the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies in Room 354 of the Eagle Student Services Center. All questions about the graduate program in journalism should be directed to Dr. Mitch Land, graduate adviser, at (940) 565-4917 or in his office in Room 205 of the GAB. International students must first contact the International Admissions & Advising Center at (940) 565-2195 and located in Room 171 of Kendall Hall.


Appointments with faculty members
Faculty members make their own appointments except during fall (in October) and spring (in March-April) semester advising weeks . Appointments during advising weeks are made by contacting Nelia Smith in Room 102 of the General Academic Building (GAB), or by phoning her at (940) 565-2277, or e-mailing her at nsmith@unt.edu . Change of major

Class schedules
Available on the Internet at http://www.unt.edu and at the Eagle Student Services Center adjacent to the University Union in the center of the campus.

A list of the department's clubs, associations and groups is available in Room 102 of the GAB.


Deadlines
When and where do I file for graduation? When are my tuition payments due? Answers to these and many other questions are all on the Internet at http://www.unt.edu.


Degree plans and advising

Usually two weeks are set aside each fall (in October) and spring (in March-April) for academic advising and degree plans. All faculty members are available individually for advising at any time within their schedules. Simply contact them in person or by phone or e-mail at the addresses below.

Graduate assistantships
Available in the fall and spring for various assignments in the department. Interested graduate students should contact Dr. Mitch Land at (940) 565-4917 or by e-mail at mland@unt.edu as soon as they are admitted to the graduate program.


The GSP Test
The GSP Test is a writing skills test that must be taken prior to enrolling in JOUR 2310. Click here for more details.

Master's comprehensive exam
Given in the fall (October), spring (March-April) and summer (June) to graduate students in their final semester of course work. Students are responsible for signing up for the exam in GAB 102. Exam is usually held on a Friday from noon to 5 p.m.


Private donations
The department continues to receive and continues to need private donations to support student scholarships, faculty travel and membership in professional organizations, research assistance, publication subscriptions, equipment and materials, software, guest speakers, promotional materials, etc. Many employers will match your donation, so check if you can double your money. Interested donors should contact the chairman, Susan Zavoina, at (940) 565-2272 or by e-mail at zavoina@unt.edu . Donations can be made payable to the Journalism Department.


Scholarships
Applications are available early each spring semester in the journalism office, GAB 102, and should be returned to the department secretary. These scholarships are awarded for the following fall semester and are open to all journalism majors. Click here for more information about 2007-2008 scholarships.


Staff
A friendly, helpful and professional Journalism Department staff member greets every visitor and student, whether in the main office in Room 102 on the lower level of the General Academic Building, or on the phone at (940) 565-2272, or via e-mail at journalism@unt.edu. Department Chairman Susan Zavoina, Administrative Assistant Maureen Landers, and secretary Cathy Turner are why the Journalism Department is known by many as the friendliest and most helpful office on campus.


Student newspaper
The award-winning North Texas Daily is published Tuesday-Friday when classes meet during the fall and spring, and on Thursdays during the two summer terms. It is available in most buildings on campus, and online at http://www.ntdaily.com.


Student radio station
The 100,000-watt signal of KNTU-FM 88.1 gives students in broadcast news the opportunity to showcase their talents in various news, public affairs, sports, music and other programs. More information is available about KNTU at http://www.kntu.unt.edu.


Student television work
NTTV Channel 22 on Charter Cable in Denton gives students in broadcast news the opportunity to polish their skills through various news and other programs. More information is available at http://www.unt.edu/nttv.
